Echo Point

No trip to the Blue Mountains is complete without a visit to the iconic Echo Point, also known as the Three Sisters Lookout.

With stunning panoramic views and jaw-dropping valleys below, Echo Point is a magical place. It is a popular tourist location, with easy access from the nearby town of Katoomba. From the well-maintained lookout soak in the fresh mountain air as you watch over ancient forests, peering towards the historic Three Sisters while the valley seems to melt around you.

Echo Point is one of the few places in the world where you’ll feel completely consumed by the surrounding mountains.

Echo Point is a wonderful stop on any day trip to the Blue Mountains. The lookout is also a fantastic base and starting point for a range of bushwalks and hikes. There’s plenty of space for you to relax while soaking in the views or enjoying a snack before heading out on one of the many walks available.

Aboriginal History at Echo Point

The area surrounding Echo Point has been an important area for the local Aboriginal people since the beginning.

The Gundungurra people have stories that explain the formations, one famous story is about three beautiful sisters Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo. They lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.

They had fallen in love with three brothers from a nearby tribe, however tribal laws forbade them from marrying.

The three brothers, unhappy with the tribal laws, decided that they would capture the sisters and force them to marry. The plan caused a major tribal battle and the sisters lives were seriously endangered.

To protect the sisters, a witchdoctor decided to turn them into stone, so that they would not be harmed during the battle. He had intended to return them to their beautiful human form, however, he died during the conflict and only he had the spell to return the ladies.

As no one was able to return the sisters from stone, they have remained standing in their rock form for generations. Today they are a reminder of the battle, and stand looking over the Jamison Valley for onlookers to see.

There are information signs around the lookout that tell you more about the history and significance of the area.

Accessing the Blue Mountains from Echo Point

Echo Point is quite a central location within the Blue Mountains if you’re looking to explore nearby attractions.

From here you can take a full-day hike to the lovely Scenic World. With plenty of signs and an easy to follow path, the hike is a great way to explore the Blue Mountains up close and personal.

The Katoomba Falls are also easily accessed from Echo Point. The large falls are some of the most beautiful in the area. Watch as the water cascades from the cliff face, feeding the trickling stream below. There are several lookout points near the falls for you to find the perfect view.

Echo Point is high on the list for many travellers heading to the Blue Mountains, and it is easy to see why. Lose yourself in the beauty of this region and spend your day exploring its stunning surrounds.
