Great Otway National Park

Set in Victoria, the Great Ocean Road stretches out along the rugged coastline, taking in lush rainforests, wild beaches, and beautiful sea views. While the ocean sprawls out in one direction, the Otway Ranges cast a pretty landscape inland.

Named a national park, the Ranges are filled with charming waterfalls and a number of weaving boardwalks that take visitors through the vibrant canopies.

At Triplet Falls, three cascading waterfalls provide the perfect backdrop for exploring, while Maits Rest is home to some stunning rainforest vistas. Over the Bass Strait, the Cape Otway Lightstation sits proudly on a rocky outcrop while the popular Great Ocean Walk leads visitors through the park to some of the Great Ocean Road’s most famous attractions, like the Twelve Apostles rock formation.

Throughout the Otway Rainforest, visitors can discover ancient plant species and look out for native animals amongst the soaring trees and lush ferns. The giant tree ferns at Maits Rest are particularly popular, while Melba Gully promises a fascinating sight with the resident glow worms.

The rainforest itself is surrounded by quaint villages that hark back to an easier time. There’s Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Anglesea to explore among others, all of which boast incredible views over the rugged scenery of the Great Ocean Road.

Back in the park, the ancient landscape unfolds in a series of narrow valleys and picturesque rock pools, while nearby Cape Otway is home to a secluded beach that’s perfect for a refreshing swim.

Exploring the Otway Rainforest is a must-do on the Great Ocean Road. Visitors can really get to know the scenery and the area’s rich history on a camping trip and by taking some of the many walks that weave through the landscape.
