Things to do in Leura

In recent years the town of Leura in the Blue Mountains has skyrocketed in popularity. Boasting beautiful gardens, scenic nature walks and a relaxed atmosphere it’s easy to see why Leura has become so loved.

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Mountains Leura’s nature walks provide stunning views of the range. A short drive will bring you to the Sublime Point lookout, where the views seem to go on forever. The walk to the lookout can be completed by even the least experienced hikers, with the path well laid out and signposted. Looking out over the Blue Mountains National Park you’ll feel like you are on the edge of the world, with views that go on forever. The lookout provides amazing views over the Jamison Valley and is a popular spot to have a picnic or to sit down for an afternoon of bird watching. Experienced rock climbers are also known to frequent the area due to its fantastic climbing face.

Keep an eye out for gang-gangs and cockatoos feeding in the area during the summer. To access the lookout, you’ll cross a dramatic ravine, with water gushing below after rains in winter. Here you also see the iconic Three Sisters formation. Many people don’t have the pleasure of seeing the formations from this angle, so be sure to look for them. On a cool and misty winters morning, you can watch the mountains seemingly erupt from the blue haze as the mist settles below.

Take a stroll down the Leura Mall, the main street in this small-town village. Enjoy old-fashioned hospitality at the delightful country cafes or spend the day exploring antique fashion, old-fashioned toy stores, and home-made wares. The main strip is lined with bright cherry blossom trees, adding to the areas old-time charm. Hidden around the corner you will find Ruby Fruit Café. Tucked out of sight the café has some of the best cakes in town, and great news for your plant eating friends, their menu is entirely vegan!

But you can’t have cake without tea, so make your wat to Bygone Beautys. This beautiful teapot museum and tearooms are home to the world’s largest private collection of teawares with over 5,500 teapots! Pop by for a look, be sure to enjoy their antique retail store while you’re there also. Not only do they stock lovely teas sets but stunning jewelry as well.

Don’t forget to visit the Everglades Gardens while you are here. Operated by the National Trust since the 1930s, this heritage garden is a delightful stop for a quick visit or a whole day. Admission fees help to keep the gardens in pristine condition. Drawing from European landscape designs, nestled in the picturesque Blue Mountains bushland, the Everglades Gardens span for over 5 hectares. Stroll through the gardens and marvel at plants from around the world, and how they have melded together to create such visually stunning gardens.

Though it may be small, the town of Leura in the Blue Mountains is a must-visit for anyone travelling through the area.
