Things to do in Lorne

Visit the beautiful town of Lorne, nestled between the Otways and white-sand beaches it’s the quintessential Great Ocean Road community.

Head down to the stunning Lorne Surf Beach and catch a wave or two. There are several beaches around the town, but this is the only one patrolled by lifeguards. If you’ve never surfed before but want a taste of the grommet lifestyle book in for a surfing lesson. Qualified instructors will guide you from shore to surf, while local surfers give you the space you need to learn.

If you want to splash about and cool down in a less structured environment, splash about in the Loutit Bay waters. Or, explore the Shelly Beach rock pools for marine critters- just remember to always look but never touch.

Stay out of the water and head into the rainforest in the Great Otway National Park. With plenty of walking tracks, misty waterfalls, and native plant life to explore the Otways are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of life. Enjoy the soothing crashing of ever-flowing waterfalls and escape the heat under thick, shady canopies.

If you’re a fisher at heart, Lorne has an abundance of fish for you to haul in. Settle in for an afternoon fishing off Lorne Pier where you’ll reel in trevally, barracuda and whiting. Remember to look out across the horizon while you’re here, Lorne is a popular whale migration route between May and September. Lorne is one of the best places to see these giants make their way along the coast.

If you’re only passing through Lorne and don’t have much time to stop and enjoy all the best parts of the town, head right to the main strip. Pick yourself and your friends up a souvenir or two at one of the many boutique stores along the main road. Sit down for a coffee or glass of wine at one of the cellars or awesome cafes, beckoning you in for a delicious snack or meal. If you want to soak up your beautiful surroundings then grab a takeaway drink or some fish and chips for a picnic on the beach.

Lorne is the arts and cultural capital of the Great Ocean Road. There’s plenty of galleries for you to explore and many events throughout the year. Head to Qdos Arts and explore their ever-changing exhibits and outdoor sculpture park. Alternatively, plan your trip out of one of the many festivals and events hosted in Lorne each year. The annual Falls Music and Arts Festival has been welcoming some of the best Indie artists from around Australia and the globe since 1996. If you prefer comedy, cabaret and theatre then the Lorne Festival of Performing Arts is for you! There are so many wonderful cultural events in this small town each year you’re sure to run into at least one.
