The Nobbies

Sitting at the very edge of Phillip Island’s shore you’ll find the Nobbies. Home to an array of curious creatures, the Nobbies is a magnificent headland with views that seem to stretch forever.

Point Grant, as it is officially known, is thought to have gained its nickname from the rocks that jut from the water at the end of the point, or perhaps the cobblestones that poke out of the water like little knobs when the tide is right. Wherever the nickname came from it has stuck, and you’ll be hard to find many people who could tell you its name is Point Grant!

Nobbies Centre

Start your visit at the Nobbies Centre. The centre overlooks Seal Rocks and has a great amount of information to help get you familiar with the area. Stop for a coffee or lunch at their café or tucker the kids about before jumping back in the car by letting them run wild in the play area.

The centre is also home to the famous Antarctic Journey, a virtual journey to the frozen lands of Antarctica. Learn all about the harsh environment of this continent and become a penguin expert. The exhibit is a full sensory experience, complete with a full augmented reality trip to the Antarctic icebergs!

Explore the coastline

After enjoying all the Nobbies Centre has to offer, take yourself for a stroll along the Nobbies boardwalk and wind your way along Phillip Island’s rugged coastline. The one-kilometre walk takes you through a surprising amount of terranes in a short amount of time. You’ll walk up and down, as the boardwalk curves and flows along the landscape. Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to see the famous Seal Rocks, Nobbies and the Nobbies Blowhole.

The Seal Rocks sit just off the headland of Point Grant and are home to one of Australia’s largest fur seal colonies. The wild colony have been living and breeding here for decades, enjoying the cool waters and abundant fish. There are an estimated 25,000 seals that live around these waters, so you’re guaranteed to see them.

If you want to get even close to the action, join a boat tour and float just metres away from them. Just remember fish are their favourite animals, and they aren’t too good a brushing their teeth!

Huge swells are common around Phillip Island and they put on quite the show at the Nobbies Blowhole. Years of erosion have produced and awesome sea cave that spits the waves back into the ocean. The Blowhole is great viewing for the whole family, and if you’re lucky enough to be there on a particularly ferocious day of swell you might just be lucky enough to feel the spray on your face.

The Nobbies has so much more to see and do than at first glance. Just a short trip from Phillip Island’s famous penguin parade, the Nobbies is a must-see on your trip. With spectacular scenes, abundant wildlife and plenty of interactive activities there is truly something for everyone at the Nobbies.
