Sitting on the south coast of Kangaroo Island is the idyllic Vivonne Bay. Looking out across beautiful turquoise waters while relaxing on the soft warm sand, it’s easy to see why the beach was voted one of Australia’s best.

The six-kilometre u-shaped beach is picture-perfect, whether you’re here to enjoy yourself or get the perfect picture Vivonne Bay will not disappoint.

Get in the water

The beach at Vivonne Bay is second to none. The clear waters are incredibly enticing and call you to come in for a swim. With plenty of shallow rock pools along the coast, the snorkelling opportunities are great. You can see ample of marine life and beautiful underwater worlds.

The surf here is great too. Plus, the beach is relatively quiet so you don’t need to worry about missing all the best waves waiting for others to go before you. Vivonne Bay is considered to be one of the safest beaches along Kangaroo Island’s south coast, so if you’re keen to get wet then this is the place to do so!

Go fishing

Vivonne Bay has become famous for its cray fishing. The waters here are perfect for cultivating cray, and multiple boats leave each morning ready to bring in a catch.

If you prefer fishing from a jetty, the Vivonne Bay Jetty is known for having plenty of fish waiting to bite each day. If you set up early you’ll be able to reel in enough for dinner with your friends that evening!

The jetty has picnic and barbeque areas that are free for the public to use, so if you’re super confident in your fishing abilities you can bring your dinner and have a cook up at the beach!

Head to Little Sahara

Just a short drive from Vivonne Bay is Little Sahara. As its name suggests, the area is a small desert just inland from the beach. The sand dunes are on private lands however the owner generously allows the public to visit as part of tours, letting them soar down the sand dunes each day.

If you’ve never been sandboarding before you might underestimate it. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can zip down the dunes! Try sliding down toboggan style first, or if you’re really daring why not try headfirst? You’ll be amazed at how fast you zoom.

Go camping

Walking distance from the beach is the Vivonne Bay Campground. The campsite is pet friendly and an awesome place to set up for a night or two. The site is first in best dressed and you can’t pre-book, but that’s just all part of the fun.

The camping ground has ample facilities while amenities and check-in are self-serve.

Vivonne Bay is one of the most picturesque areas on Kangaroo Island. No matter how you choose to spend your time along the beautiful beach you’re sure to have a fabulous time.
