When people plan their trip to South Australia they generally focus on Adelaide, however, they forget to consider what other regions of the state they may like to see.

Many popular areas such as the Barossa Valley, Kangaroo Island, and the Adelaide Hills are all relatively close to the city, but what is there beyond the hills?

South Australia is a huge state, well most states in Australia are, so don’t fall into the trap of just visiting the one small area around the capital. These are a few of our favourite areas in South Australia!

  • Coober Pedy

Unearth the underground town of Coober Pedy. Halfway to the Northern Territory border, Coober Pedy is the heart of the South Australian desert. There’s something special about Coober Pedy and it isn’t just the stunning red dirt. Across the horizon, you’re confronted with chimneys coming from the ground, or signs alerting you to unmarked holes. Why? The town of Coober Pedy lives underground.

Scorching hot summers have seen locals flee underground to hide from the heat. But it isn’t just the underground homes that make this town so special, Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world.

Australia has more than 80% of the world’s commercial opal supply, with much of it coming from here! Coober Pedy first found opals over 100 years ago, and opal mining has been the primary occupation of the town since.

Coober Pedy is an incredibly unique town and well worth the time to visit!

  • Nullarbor

Okay so the Nullarbor isn’t a place as much as it is a road. Stretching from the goldfields of Western Australia all the way to the Eyre Peninsula South Australia, the Nullarbor is four times the length of Belgium!

The road takes at least four days to travel, you’ll cross through three time zones and have the satisfaction of travelling the world’s longest stretch of straight road. A trip along the Nullarbor will open your eyes to the lively Australian outback.

Explore ancient caves, decorated with generations-old rock arts, or stand at the bottom of Australia, looking out into the Southern Ocean. Keep your eyes open for wild camels, emu, dingo and kangaroo wandering around the open plains.

The Nullarbor will take you through the most beautiful landscapes in Australia, so if you have the chance to travel it, please do. And if you’re in need of a break from your trip, you could always play the Nullarbor Links golf course!

  • City bookends

No matter where you do decide to go in South Australia, starting or ending your trip in Adelaide is a fantastic idea. Australia is a large country and it can be tiring to visit all these far-off places. By ending your South Australia trip in Adelaide, you can recoup and relax in a comfy hotel or along a beautiful beach.

South Australia has an amazing collection of places well beyond the bounds of Adelaide. Expand your South Australia trip and explore beyond the city, we’re positive you’ll love it!
