Set outside the vibrant metropolis of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley unfolds in an excellent display of rolling green hills and picturesque vineyards. Old farmhouses dot the scenery, providing a cultured and beautiful escape from city life.

Today, the valley is best-known for its great array of wineries, many of which have played a huge part in Australia’s ever-growing wine industry. Here are some of the best in the region.

• Giant Steps

  Named after an album by jazz legend John Coltrane, this music-inspired venue promises a large wine bar and dining area with an open kitchen and barrel hall out the back. Tuck into delicious flavours of food and wine against a 1960s jazz backdrop for the ultimate cultural adventure.

• Oakridge Wines

  This family-run winery is best-known for its great on-site restaurant which is headed by chef Matt Stone. As well as an array of delightful wines, the winery serves up a range of delectable dishes made only with local ingredients from the kitchen garden and local growers. You’ll find the perfect tipple accompaniment to every seasonal dish here.

• TarraWarra Estate

  Perhaps one of the more popular wine-tasting venues in the valley, the TarraWarra Estate perches on a pretty hill overlooking the valley. As well as jaw-dropping views over rolling greenery, the architecture of the estate is well worth a look. There’s an on-site cellar door, art gallery, and restaurant that all sit snugly amongst the estate’s sprawling vineyard.

• Yering Station

  For a trip down memory lane and the chance to experience one of the Yarra Valley’s oldest wineries, visit Yering Station. This historic winery has been part of the country’s wine scene since 1838 and continues to produce popular flavours that are sold all over the world. In the original winery building, you can marvel at the historic charm while trying some of the local wines.

• Acacia Ridge

  Promising views across the Great Dividing Mountain range, Acacia Ridge is a firm favourite for keen wine enthusiasts. There are plenty of flavours to try, as well as an on-site restaurant that boasts a menu filled with local dishes.

• Domaine Chandon

  For something a little more sparkly, hotfoot it to Domaine Chandon, which was set up by French Champagne house Moet & Chandon in the 80s. Today, it produces sparkling wine using the method traditionnelle.

Wine-tasting in the Yarra Valley is a must-do for any culture vultures who want to explore want Melbourne has to offer outside of the city centre.
