Melbourne Cricket Ground
Affectionately known as the G’, the Melbourne Cricket Ground is the heart and soul of Melbourne sport. Built in 1853, the MCG has hosted international cricket tests and world cups, countless Australian rules football grand finals and even the 1956 Olympics! People flock from around the world to step food inside the hallowed stadium, for emotion and drama there’s no stadium quite like it. Aside from massive sporting events, the G’ has hosted international music superstars such as David Bowie, Elton John and Guns N’ Roses. The G’ even welcomed Pope John Paul II to host mass in 1986! A visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and National Sports Museum inside is a must.
Australian Grand Prix Circuit
Want to see the fastest F1 circuit in the world? Head down to the Melbourne GP track! First designed in 1993, the Melbourne GP circuit uses a unique mix of existing and temporary roads. Hosted annually at the start of Autumn, the Melbourne Grand Prix is the first race of the Formula 1 competition year. If you’re visiting Melbourne outside of race time, you can drive the circuit yourself as for nine months of the year the roads are open to the public. The Grand Prix attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year, all gathering to see the fastest cars in the country.
Marvel Stadium has had its fair share of name changes over the years. From the Telstra Dome, to Etihad Stadium, it’s most recently found its name with Disney’s Marvel, giant Thor hammer and Spiderman climbing wall included! Marvel is unique in its city central location and retractable roof which ensures no event is every rained out. Aside from regular Australian rules football games, the stadium has also hosted Twenty-20 cricket matches, rugby games, and speedway Grands Prix.
Melbourne and Olympic Parks
Melbourne and Olympic Parks are located next to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They are home to some of Australia’s biggest international sporting and cultural events. Each year, the first Grand Slam event of the season, the Australian Open is hosted on the precincts 40 tennis courts. The two-week extravaganza is held during Melbourne’s scorching summer and hosts the world’s biggest tennis names. When not holding the tennis, the precinct is a one-stop-shop for basketball, soccer and netball lovers. Annual speed cycling events are also held here.
