Imagine yourself in Australia’s rich wildlife, walking through the lush bush land, and stopping to see the many unique animals roaming around.
Kangaroo Island is a getaway paradise, bursting with natural wonders and jaw-dropping views. But where to start? Hit the road and travel through the island to find the best attractions the island has to offer. We’ve made it a bit easier for you by listing our favourite stops at Kangaroo Island that are well worth the visit.
The name Kangaroo Island may have you confused, but the most popular animal that calls this island home is the Australian fur seal. With over 500 Australian seals roaming the area, these creatures are on everyone’s bucket list when visiting the area. Seal Bay is littered with colonies, lounging about in the sand and rocks along the shoreline. Wander down to the beach and watch these cute creatures as they frolic with each other, or simply take a snooze in the sun. What’s great about this attraction is there are no fences or restrictions for tourists, allowing people to stroll right past the animals, seeing them up close and personal. Please remember however that you must remain at least 30 metres away from the animals at all times.
Vivonne Bay Bistro
Throughout the island, there are a number of quaint villages and charming towns to venture into. Vivonne Bay is one of the most popular areas on the island and can be found to the south overlooking the sapphire ocean. Within the bay, there is plenty to do, but we recommend grabbing a bite to eat in one of the local restaurants. Vivonne Bay Bistro a great spot to tuck into, with the beautiful greenery and ocean backdrop perfect for a relaxing break during your journey. Dig into a hearty meal and fuel for your next activity.
Flinders Chase National Park
Flinders Chase National Park is found at the west end of Kangaroo Island. The national park is home to incredible native wildlife and has several hikes for you to complete. Choose a multi day hike and camp along the way, or complete a shorter walk from the main car park. There is a visitors centre here to help you learn about the area and plan your trip through the park.
Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
Visit the 5,000-acre sanctuary nestled on the island, known as one of Australia’s most bio-diverse and well-maintained ecosystems. With over 200 species of native plants, as well as beloved Australian animals such as the koala, kangaroo, wallaby, possum, and echidna. Wander through the park and catch a glimpse of these creatures in their natural habitat. Take a guided nocturnal walk to see animals of the night and explore supervised only areas.
This is by far one of Kangaroo Island’s most incredible natural wonders. The Remarkable Rocks are large granite rocks scattering along the cliff coast. They are estimated to be around 500 million years old and are thought to be made up by the granite embedding into the crust of the earth thru the Ordovician period. Step in and around these oddly shaped rocks, which contrast beautifully with the crashing waves alongside them.
