Where does the Great Ocean Road Start and End?

The Great Ocean Road is a 243-kilometre stretch of road along Victoria’s coastline, but where does it start and where does it end?

The Great Ocean Road officially begins in Torquay at the iconic Great Ocean Road gate. The road winds along the south-east coastline from here before concluding at the small regional town of Allansford, just outside of Warrnambool.

• Torquay

  Torquay is the heart of Australian surfing. With white capped waves crashing across the beach and plenty of surf lifestyle stores hoarding around the main street it is easy to see why surfers flock there from across the country. The lovely seaside town is home to the World Surfing Museum and is the perfect place to board private scenic flights or join a tandem skydive.

  Stop at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery for a delicious chocolate tasting. Enjoy free chocolate tastings and immerse yourself in a chocolate experience. Wander the chocolate showroom, with floor to ceiling walls covered in every flavour of chocolate you can imagine. Watch as master chocolatiers make delicious treats through the factory viewing window, or join a chocolate making class yourself! Australia gets pretty warm during the summer so treat yourself to an ice cream. All ice creams and gelatos are made in-house using the best local produce available. Plus, their HUGE scoop sizes will keep you cool for hours!

• Allansford

  Allansford is a rather quaint Victorian town, in fact it is so small that you may not have known it existed if it wasn’t the end of such a famous stretch of road! While in town though be sure to visit Allansford Cheese World. Enjoy a tasting of their Warrnambool Heritage Cheddar and watch a film about their factory and cheese making process. The team is all about serving the highest quality cheeses, so no tours are available to abide by health regulations. You can however explore the Cheese World Museum. Their extensive collection includes items from farm life in the early 1900’s.

  With a belly and a bag full of cheese head to Hopkins Falls. At just 12 metres tall what these falls lack in height they make up in width! The massive 90m wide falls create a curtain of water crashing into the river below. There are two viewing platforms for you to look down over the falls from. In the winter keep an eye out for young eels jumping over the small rocks in their path as they migrate downstream.

There are so many fantastic towns and attractions all the way down the Great Ocean Road. Pop by lovely seaside towns such as Apollo Bay, Port Campbell, Lorne and Port Fairy. Don’t forget the beautiful natural attractions too. A trip down the Great Ocean Road simply isn’t complete without seeing the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Otways or the Razorback.

The Great Ocean Road has so many wonderful areas on interest that wherever you go you’ll be surrounded by beauty. Just don’t forget to stop at each end of the road, for these towns aren’t worth missing!
